I wanted to give you an update and share the great news about how it is going so far. The bike has been awesome and on our first ride together, [my son] pedaled for 45 minutes and held onto his handlebars the entire time. I was really surprised! For us, it has been literally life-changing because now we have an outlet and therapeutic activity for him in this COVID-19 reality/world that we can do together. For that reason alone, I cannot thank you all enough for your support and advocacy to make this happen. It means the world to us! We purchased our Buddy Bike in 2015 after seeing it at a local conference a year before. Outside our budget but knew it was for the best, we saved and partnered with extended family to purchase.
After more than five years we have 100's if not 1000's of miles on this family building piece of our family. Still (weather permitting) hardly a week goes by that we don't take at least a short ride but we are know to take as much as 8-10 miles ride now that our stamina is built up. We even rode a leg of the Special Olympics Torch Run with the flame attached to the back of the bike.
The one side effect that I didn't even consider is the core strength our son has developed over the years. Have DS and the hypertonia that comes with it he is stronger and more stable because of it. When we let other kids ride with me to try the bike it is obvious just how unstable they are in comparison.
Note: we went the first year without the Hollywood bike rack and were "trapped" in our local surroundings. After we purchased the rack we became travelers with our bikes we have traveled several hours to ride the Mission Trail in San Antonio and other trails in the region.
We couldn't be more grateful to the team for creating this Inclusive and Liberating bike. Thanks BB!

Rejoice received a Buddy Bike for Christmas through the 3rd Annual Buddy Bikes for Christmas program. Here is a message and some photos sent by the family:

"Hi Shelley!!

We got into Olympia to pick up our girls bike today!! We got a chance to take it for a spin around the neighborhood close by. It is such an amazing tandem bike. It rolls so smoothly and the fancy gear mechanism on the Sport model is amazing. Both my husband and I were completely comfortable riding with Rejoice and she was ALL Smiles being able to sit up straight and pedal confidently down the road. She wants to know how fast we can go next time!! ;o)

We will be out again tomorrow for sure.

The staff at Bike Tech were so very helpful and spent time with us to ensure we were comfortable with her new bike, how to get on and off the tandem, and how to take the front wheel off so it will fit safely in our short bed truck.

I also wanted to take this time to thank you and your team for representing/creating such an amazing product!! It's been a real struggle to get my son outside and active for a long time until I purchased [the Buddy Bike]. I may have mentioned that my son is on the Autism spectrum and this Bike has done more for him than you know. He is fully engaged, is getting physical activity each day, now playing with the community of kids in the neighborhood, having full conversations with him and the list goes on and on….God Bless you all for creating such an amazing tool. Best decision I have ever made purchasing this bike! I've been sharing my discovery with everyone I know! Thank you doesn't even begin to express the gratitude I feel!!!

The joy I have literally brings tears to mine and my wife's eyes. I can't even talk about how much it's doing for my son without getting emotional!! The Buddy Bike became part of our family...it is always with us...Peer likes to ride the bike 30 km and more is not a problem...at the moment he uses the footpegs - he don't like the movement with the pedals, yet. But I thing it takes a while an he will help me uphill...Here are two pictures out of my series "The Buddy Bike at..."

Attention Parents: If you have a child with any sort of advanced special need and is unable to learn to ride a bike on their own, this bike is a wonderful invention! On this bike the Stoker sits in FRONT, not in back! (the stoker is the individual providing locomotion but not steering). The Captain rides in back and is somewhat higher than the stoker, and has elongated steering handles so that they are reaching around the stoker. It sounds awkward, but I've seen this bike in action, and it's so cool!

Because the stoker is in front, they can see everything that's going on, they feel the wind in their face, and they can get the sensation of steering (as they have handlebars that are connected to the main column). They truly get the complete sensation of riding a bike on their own.

I have friends who have a severely autistic son. He loves to participate in sports, but had been completely unable to use a traditional tandem bike because he would jump off the back at any unexpected moment. He absolutely LOVES this bike! He and his dad ride it every single day, many times multiple times a day (dad is getting a bit tired out!).

If you know someone who might benefit from this bike, please share this post! It's pricey, but honestly no more than a high end mountain or racing bike.
